35 Miles from Shore

Paperback
Author:
Emilio Corsetti, III
Published by:
Odyssey Publishing
On May 2, 1970, a DC-9 jet with 57 passengers and a crew of six departed from New York's JFK International Airport en route to the tropical island of St. Maarten, but four hours and 34 minutes later the flight ended in the shark-infested waters of the Caribbean. It was, and remains, the only open-water ditching of a commercial jet. The subsequent rescue of survivors took nearly three hours and involved the coast guard, navy, and marines. This gripping account of that fateful day recounts what was happening inside the cabin, the cockpit, and the helicopters as the crews struggled against the weather and dwindling daylight to rescue the survivors, who had only their life vests and a lone escape chute to keep them afloat.

"An evocative and insightful look at the history of flight written from the perspective of the history-makers themselves." --Dr. Richard P. Hallion, Verville Fellow, Smithsonian Institution Presenting the lives of more than twenty aviation luminaries from throughout history, this middle reader is a captivating celebration of man's aspirations for the skies. From the story of the Wright brothers to that of Alan Shepard, Jr., the author, himself an experienced pilot, introduces young readers to the history of modern flight and the inspiring figures who followed their dreams to navigate over vast oceans, set altitude and speed records, pioneer stunt techniques, and eventually rocket into the great abyss of space. Both children and adult readers learn about Roscoe Turner, air racer and showman, who started by flying stunts in the movie Hell's Angels and went on to clock an average speed of 283.4 miles per hour, a new record of his time. ...

Aeroguide - Buccaneer
order quantity
A$ 33.95 each
Paperback
Author:
Roger Chesneau
Published by:
Ad Hoc Publications,Stowmarket
The last combat aircraft designed under the Blackburn Aircraft Company banner, the Buccaneer was a low altitude aircraft carrier based nuclear strike aircraft. The secret to the Buccaneer's success was its ability to fly 'under the radar' at extreme low level before popping up and delivering its 'special weapon' - as nuclear bombs were referred to at the time. Seeing extensive service with the Royal Navy, the Buccaneer was eventually purchased - somewhat begrudgingly - for the Royal Air Force after the BAC TSR.2 supersonic strike aircraft was cancelled in 1965. A small number of Buccaneers were ordered by the Sotuh African Air Force as part of the Simonstown Agreement allowing the Royal Navy to use South African Navy facilities whilst rounding the Cape. As with many ageing British combat aircraft, the Buccaneer saw military action at the twilight of its career, carrying out laser guided bomb attacks on Iraqi bunkers during Operation ...

Aeroguide - Jaguar

Paperback
Author:
Roger Chesneau
Published by:
Ad Hoc Publications,Stowmarket
Initially conceived as a two place supersonic trainer for Great Britain and France, the SEPECAT Jaguar evolved and matured into a formidable close support strike aircraft. Intended for service with Great Britain and France, the Jaguar saw limited international sales success, being sold to Equador, Nigeria and Oman. Production of the Jaguar under licence was undertaken by Hindustan Aircraft Limited in India as a maritime strike platform. Although initially mocked by RAF personnel (one particular jibe was a saucer of milk left next to its nose undercarriage leg!) - it was claimed with tongue in cheek that the Jaguar was the only jet that counted its take-off run in its combat radius - The Jaguar became the most numerous strike aircraft in RAF service until the arrival of the Panavia Tornado in the early 1980s. In 1991 the Jaguar went to war as part of the Allied effort to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi invasion, proving itself as a sturdy ...

Aeroguide - Vulcan

A$ 35.95 each
Paperback
Author:
Roger Chesneau
Published by:
Ad Hoc Publications,Stowmarket
One of the most evocative post-war military aircraft, the Avro Vulcan was one of Britain's trio of nuclear jet bombers, the V-Force. Possessing surprising manoeuvrability for such a big aircraft, the Vulcan was as popular among the airshow going crowd as it was to its crews. Although thankfully never seeing action in its intended nuclear role, at the very end of its career, the Vulcan was called on to attack Argentine positions at Port Stanley airfield during the Falklands War in 1982. This reprint of this book examines the history of the Vulcan, including service during the Falklands War, with many photographs never before seen in print. Also included are scale drawings and close up shots illustrating the Vulcan in detail. Includes a list of preserved examples.
