A$ 28.95 each
Paperback
Author: William Gurstelle
Published by: Chicago Review Press
Written for reasonable risk takers and suburban dads who want to add more excitement to their lives, this daring combination of science, history, and DIY projects explains why danger is good for you and details the art of living dangerously. All of the projects—from throwing knives, drinking absinthe, and eating fugu to cracking a bull whip, learning baritsu, and building a flamethrower—have short learning curves; are human-focused, as opposed to technology-centric; are affordable; and demonstrate true but reasonable risk. The guide maintains that risk takers are more successful, more interesting individuals who lead more fulfilling lives. What would the world be like if Thomas Edison retired after 30 years working for the railroad, it asks, instead of getting fired for blowing up a rail car with one of his experiments? Though the manual doesn’t advocate getting fired, it does reveal that making black powder is pure excitement. Unlike ... more

Collapse Weave order quantity
  +   -
A$ 47.95 each
Paperback
Author: Anne Field
Published by: Willson Scott Publishing
This new method of weaving, termed Collapse Weave, was an ancient form of decorative weaving largely overlooked by modern weavers. Collapse weave can be created by contrasting yarn factors, or combining weave structures that react with each other to create ridges and hollows. The deliberately pleated and puckered fabric produced has a flexibility of movement that makes it lovely to wear, and the uniqueness of the weave means the artistry of the weaver can be seen in the cloth. This is the kind of weaving that can only be created by hand, and is extremely satisfying to produce. Instructions are clearly written and easy to understand, and the book is fully illustrated with examples of the kinds of cloth produced, and clear, easy to follow diagrams.

Devore: For Weavers and Knitters order quantity

A$ 47.95 each
Paperback
Author: Anne Field
Published by: Willson Scott Publishing
Dévoré is a process that has been used in the fashion industry for many years. Originally it was known as “poor man’s lace” and was called “broderie chimique” in Europe because it was used to simulate magazine embroidery. The main use of dévoré has been on cut velvet fabric with a pile of viscose or rayon on a silk backing. The rayon was burnt out leaving elaborate etched patterns on the transparent silk backing.
Dévoré, from the French word for devour, occurs when sodium bisulphate is applied to the cloth, dried, then heated. The heat process causes the sodium bisulphate to eat away at the fabric, leaving the treated area transparent. This book shows you how to make the cloth for dévoré, the solution and the process to make your own beautiful dévoré fabrics.
