The New New Zealand - The Demographic Disruption We're Not Talking About by Paul Spoonley

$43.95 AUD

Available Stock:

Category: General

A BOLD NEW BOOK ON POPULATION TRENDS AND THE NEED TO CONFRONT THEM. In 2030 there may be six million of us. One and a half million of us will live overseas. We will be clustered in Auckland, dependent on migration, and worried about a shortage of workers. We havent planned for this. We need to. This maj or new book by Distinguished Professor Paul Spoonley, New Zealands preeminent commentator on population trends, looks at our rapidly growing and changing population and the demographic disruption it is already causing. To his mind, we are not taking enough notice of this disruption, and New Zealand urgently needs a population policy. With chapters like OK Boomer and Why Would Anyone Want to Live in Auckland? this book is urgent, provocative and will fuel many a dinner-party and policymaking conversation. ...Show more

Thomas Potts of Canterbury - Colonist and Conservationist by Paul Star

$43.95 AUD

Available Stock:
9

Category: General

"In 1858 Canterbury settler Thomas Potts protested against the destruction of tōtara on the Port Hills near Christchurch. A decade later, as a member of Parliament, he made forest conservation a national issue. Through his writing he raised the then novel idea of protecting native birds on island reserv es, and proposed the creation of national domains or parks. As a pioneering colonist, acclimatist and runholder, however, Potts own actions threatened the very environments he sought to maintain. This makes him a fascinating subject as we confront present-day problems in balancing development and conservation. This book is about, and partly by, Potts, and through him about New Zealand and the course and consequences of colonisation. It describes and interprets his life, from his early years in England through to his 34 years in New Zealand. Excerpts from Potts vivid 1850s diary, written from close to the edge of European settlement, are published here for the first time. Thomas Potts of Canterbury also reproduces 11 long-forgotten essays by him from the 1880s, in which he reflected on the 1850s and what had happened since both to New Zealands natural environment and to Māori and Pākehā. Sixteen pages of contemporary images supplement the text. Thomas Potts of Canterbury will appeal to anyone interested in the early history of Canterbury, in environmental change, and in early efforts in New Zealand towards conservation. It is a story of conflicting goals, magnificently exemplified in the life and writings of a man who strove, 150 years ago, to be both colonist and conservationist." ...Show more

No Place To Go by LEZLIE LOWE

Why are public toilets so crappy? An eye-opening look at how public toilets are letting us all down and why this is a political, not just personal issue. Adults don't talk about the business of doing our business. We work on one assumption: the world of public bathrooms is problem—and politics-free. No Place To Go reveals the opposite is true. No Place To Go reveals the opposite is true. Embarking on a toilet tour from London to San Francisco to Toronto, from pay potties to deserted alleyways, No Place To Go is a marriage of urbanism, social narrative, and pop culture that shows the ways—momentous and mockable—that public toilets just don't work. Like, for the homeless, who, faced with no place to go sometimes literally take to the streets. (Ever heard of a municipal poop map?) For people with invisible disabilities, such as Crohn's disease, who stay home rather than risk soiling themselves on public transit routes. For girls who quit sports teams because they don't want to run to the edge of the pitch to pee. Peel back the layers on public bathrooms and it's clear many more people want for good access than have it. Public bathroom access is about cities, society, design, movement, and equity. The real question is: Why are public toilets so crappy? ...Show more

Politics in the Playground - The World of Early Childhood Education in Aotearoa New Zealand by Helen May

$54.95 AUD

Available Stock:

Category: General

Freshly updated in 2019, the third edition of Politics in the Playground: The world of early childhood in Aotearoa New Zealand is a lively history of early childhood education and care in Aotearoa New Zealand in the postwar era. The book follows on from Discovery of Early Childhood (1997, 2013), which t raced the origins of institutional care and education for young children in Europe, US and New Zealand prior to state interest and serious investment. This latest edition brings the story right up to date with developments under the Labour coalition government of Jacinda Ardern. The place of children in New Zealand's social history makes this book a remarkable record of social movements. The postwar search for security, the radicalism of the 1960s and 1970s, the rise of feminism, the role of the state in social issues, increasing employment of women - all have impacted on early childhood education. The language of the debate has shifted from 'social progress' in mid-century, to the economic terminology of the 1990s, some cautious consideration of the young child citizen in the 2000s, followed by the rhetoric of 'risk', the 'vulnerable child' and a new story in this revised edition covering the 2010s.This is an account of critical issues for young children that will interest parents, policy- makers, teachers and students. ...Show more

Water Rights for Ngai Tahu by Te Maire Tau

$27.95 AUD

Available Stock:
8

Category: General

There is perhaps no issue in New Zealand today more contentious than water rights. The Crown claims that no one owns water, but its use, irrigation and treatment are controlled by local governments empowered by the Crown. Since the 1990s resource consents for the taking of water, in Canterbury and South land especially, have increased dramatically and the environmental situation is reaching a breaking point. After years of discussion some kind of system regarding the ownership of water is inevitable. In Water Rights for Ngāi Tahu, Te Maire Tau considers the historical and political framework that has contributed to the current state of water rights in the Ngāi Tahu takiwā. He explores the customary, legal and Treaty frameworks that feed into the debate regarding the ownership of water. From 1844 to 1864 the Crown purchased more than 34.5 million acres of land from Ngāi Tahu, but in most purchase deeds water is not mentioned. How does this play into claims to water? Should the Treaty be relied upon? How far can kaitiakitanga take us if the goal is mana motuhake and tino rangatiratanga? In this short book Te Maire Tau lays out the historical background and context to water rights, and opens a discussion about where to proceed next in determining a Ngāi Tahu position on water. ...Show more
